“Posterity should decide what is good and what is not”

On September 13, 2024, a special exhibition of works by the Dermbach artist WERNER SCHWARZ was opened with a festive vernissage to mark his 100th birthday.
birthday in the Anneliese-Deschauer-Galerie Geisa.
Many visitors attended, including visitors from Dermbach, the painter’s home town, including Mayor Thomas Hugk and local mayor Nancy Hepp.

The upper floor of the gallery was also well occupied
“Let posterity decide what is good and what is not” – words from an artist who was considered a likeable, unobtrusive, friendly and very helpful person in his work, his creations and his life.
Werner Schwarz, who after the war trained as a decorative and mural painter, studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and was employed in the public education department in Bad Salzungen, immersed himself ever deeper in painting and art and was happy to pass on his experience and skills to others.
Many people learned from him, whether in painting and drawing circles or through his work in the Association of Visual Artists.
As an active member for many years, he was very well known.
Over 50 years of friendship with the artist – Rainer Döhrer gave an exciting
laudatory speechLove of his homeland His view of nature and his homeland, the Rhön, characterize his motifs.
They appear quite different from what was expected and demanded by the state at the time.
Of course, his work includes paintings of the post-war period, the flourishing industries (e.g. “Kalischacht”, “Bildnis des Brigadiers Weidner” from the VEB Wälzkörperwerk Schweina), portraits of Bulgarian people, but also pictures of landscapes and the Rhön mountains.
In 1956, he ventured into self-employment.

range of work The well-chosen selection of pictures for the exhibition shows the artist’s range of work over many years.
Initially very detailed depictions of the “shepherd” in ink and graphically followed later by almost expressive depictions of shepherd portraits.
They literally explode in bold colors and powerful brushstrokes.
Next to them are the depictions of the “Bulgarians”, which appear pensive.
Framed by dark colors, they nevertheless radiate joie de vivre and experience.
Four watercolor paintings radiate calm, serenity and almost sentimental vacation reveries.

color scheme His favorite motif, the Gläserberg, greets visitors right at the beginning of the exhibition.
Plain, simple, reduced to clear forms, all vibrant in color.
As in impressionist paintings, different times of day show the effect of light on the motif. Sometimes the glass appears yellow in the bright sunshine, sometimes blue framed by the clear sky.

StertzingFavouritemotifs The series of four “Museum Dermbach”, a motif that was very close to the painter’s heart, was created in 2006.
The museum was demolished shortly afterwards.
Here, too, the colors and shapes, as well as the incredibly impasto application of paint, testify to the artist’s great emotionality.
His expression of saying goodbye to a beloved motif.
As a contemporary witness, Erhard Röhr reported on the painting circle with Werner Schwarz
The painting “View of the Dermbach Church” is the favorite piece of daughter Kristin Mainzer, who was moved by the large number of guests.
It hangs in her kitchen.
Painted in her favorite colors, it always reminds her of her father and his love for his homeland.
She also explains why her father’s style had changed so radically.
The disease in his right hand did not stop him from painting.
Instead of fine lines and soft colors, he now used the brush with his left hand, sometimes even his fingers.
A selection of Werner Schwarz’s great artistic oeuvre
And posterity”: Every style of the artist Werner Schwarz is impressive, captivating with a loving choice of motif and excellent skill.
“Not all the works in the exhibition are described here – make your own impression of the Dermbach artist Werner Schwarz!”
